“You Can’t Make the Film Without Me”: Salman Khan on Raja Shivaji Role

Riteish Deshmukh has revealed that Salman Khan insisted on being part of his historical film Raja Shivaji. The film, based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is scheduled to release in theatres on May 1, 2026.
Salman Khan Asked for a Role
Riteish Deshmukh shared that he did not initially approach Salman Khan for Raja Shivaji. During a New Year meeting, Salman asked about the film’s schedule and directly enquired about his role.
When Riteish said he had not planned any part for him, Salman responded, “No, no, no… you can’t make the film without me. I have to be in it.” Riteish described the moment as one filled with “warmth and belonging.”
A Long-Standing Collaboration
Riteish Deshmukh highlighted his ongoing association with Salman Khan. The actor made a cameo in Lai Bhaari, which marked Riteish’s Marathi film debut.
Salman also appeared in Ved, Riteish’s directorial debut. Riteish recalled that Salman agreed to participate in both films without hesitation, often confirming his involvement within minutes.
Salman Khan’s Role in Raja Shivaji
In Raja Shivaji, Salman Khan is set to play Jeeva Mahala, a loyal aide of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The character is known for bravery and close association with the Maratha ruler.
Reports suggest that the role may include key dramatic moments, possibly involving scenes with Sanjay Dutt, who is also part of the film’s cast.
Film Cast and Production
Raja Shivaji features a large ensemble cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, and others. The film also marks the acting debut of Riteish Deshmukh’s son, Rahyl.
The project is produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh under Mumbai Film Company and presented by Jio Studios.
A Decade-Long Journey
Riteish Deshmukh revealed that the idea of playing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj dates back to 2016. The project faced delays, including disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the trailer launch, Riteish said, “It’s been 10 years,” describing the emotional journey behind bringing the film to life.
