Batwara 1947: Sunny Deol’s Partition Drama Unveils First Motion Poster

The makers of Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol, have unveiled the film’s first motion poster and confirmed its theatrical release for August 14, 2026. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the period drama is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India.
Sharing the motion poster on social media, the makers wrote, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”
The poster offers a glimpse into the film’s emotional and conflict-ridden setting. Sunny Deol is seen holding a blazing torch while standing protectively in front of his family amid scenes of unrest and violence. Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol and other members of the cast also feature in the first look.
The imagery has drawn attention for contrasting with one of Deol’s most iconic screen moments from Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, where his character famously wielded a hand pump as a weapon. In Batwara 1947, the torch appears to symbolize protection, resilience and survival during one of the most turbulent periods in the subcontinent’s history.
From Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947
The project was initially announced under the title Lahore 1947. The film was later renamed Batwara 1947, a title considered more reflective of its central theme.
Reports indicate that the title change required securing rights linked to the 1989 film Batwara, produced by the late Salim Akhtar. The rights were eventually acquired by the production after discussions between Aamir Khan and the Akhtar family.
The original Batwara (1989), directed by J.P. Dutta, featured an ensemble cast that included Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Amrita Singh, Poonam Dhillon, Mohsin Khan, Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh.
Cast and Creative Team
Alongside Sunny Deol, the film stars Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol, Abhimanyu Singh, Khhushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur in key roles.
The project marks a reunion between Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, who previously collaborated on acclaimed films such as Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak. It also brings together Deol and Preity Zinta once again after films including Farz, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke, Heroes and Bhaiaji Superhit.
The film’s music has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Santosh Sivan serves as cinematographer, while Shyam Salgaonkar handles editing. The sound design has been created by Resul Pookutty, with production design by Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray.
Story Set During the Partition
Batwara 1947 is described as a period drama exploring the human cost of Partition and the emotional upheaval experienced by families caught in the violence and displacement of 1947. The narrative focuses on themes of identity, humanity and survival during a time of deep social and political upheaval.
The film has also been linked to Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Nai, which examines Partition through personal relationships rather than large-scale political events.
With its historical backdrop, ensemble cast and Independence Day weekend release, Batwara 1947 is expected to be one of the major Hindi film releases of 2026. The film is also set for a box-office clash with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, which is scheduled for release on the same date.
