Cocktail 2 Trailer Introduces a New Love Triangle, Draws Mixed Reactions Online
The trailer of Cocktail 2 has finally arrived, giving audiences a glimpse into the romantic comedy led by Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. Directed by Homi Adajania, the film follows the legacy of the 2012 hit Cocktail while introducing a fresh cast and a new story centred on modern relationships, friendship and emotional complications.
The trailer focuses on the dynamic between Shahid Kapoor’s Kunal, Kriti Sanon’s Ally and Rashmika Mandanna’s Diya. Packed with romance, comedy and relationship drama, the preview hints at a tangled love triangle where friendship and love collide. Sharing the trailer online, Maddock Films described the film as a journey “From friends to lovers to CHAOS.”
One of the trailer’s standout moments sees Shahid’s character compare love to a torn T-shirt that provides comfort despite its flaws, setting the tone for the film’s exploration of contemporary relationships. The visuals also revive the nostalgia of the original film with the return of the iconic song Tum Hi Ho Bandhu in a new form.
Many viewers praised the chemistry between the lead actors, particularly Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. Several social media users highlighted Kriti’s screen presence, with one fan writing, “Anyone who doubted Kriti’s skills, she has shut down everyone with her performance. She has her own grace and aura and she’s such a phenomenal actress.” Others celebrated the music featured in the trailer, including the Arijit Singh track Tujhko.
At the same time, the trailer generated a divided response online. Some viewers felt it lacked the charm and emotional depth of the original Cocktail, which starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty. Critics on social media questioned the chemistry among the new leads, while others argued that Shahid Kapoor appeared miscast in the role.
A recurring theme among reactions was nostalgia for the original film. Several fans said they missed Saif Ali Khan’s trademark humour and carefree energy, which they believed played a major role in the success of the 2012 film. Others described the trailer as overly loud and emotionally disconnected from its predecessor.
Written by Tarun Jain and Luv Ranjan, Cocktail 2 features music by Pritam Chakraborty, lyrics by Irshad Kamil, and vocals from artists including Neeraj Shridhar and Kavita Seth. The film completed production in January, with Adajania later describing the project as “a tad special” while thanking the cast and crew after the shoot wrapped.
Speaking about the film earlier, Kriti Sanon said Cocktail 2 presents a fresh take on modern relationships while retaining the contemporary appeal that made the original film resonate with audiences. She also praised her experience working with Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna and Homi Adajania.
With its blend of romance, friendship, humour and emotional conflict, Cocktail 2 enters theatres on June 19 carrying both the expectations of a beloved franchise and the challenge of establishing its own identity.
