The trailer for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, has been released after the film’s planned trailer launch event was abruptly cancelled. The romantic comedy is scheduled to release in theatres on June 5.

The trailer introduces a fast-paced comedy centred on relationships, misunderstandings and a complicated double life. It opens in a courtroom where Varun Dhawan and Mrunal Thakur’s characters are seeking a divorce. During the proceedings, Varun’s character insists he is a caring husband, before revealing that his desire to become a father lies at the centre of their conflict.

The story shifts when he meets Pooja Hegde’s character at a club and falls for her. The situation spirals when both women are shown to be pregnant with his child, setting off a chain of cover-ups, confusion and comic situations as he struggles to keep the two relationships from colliding.

The trailer leans heavily into slapstick humour and situational comedy, drawing comparisons to David Dhawan’s earlier entertainers and the 2005 comedy Garam Masala. One sequence shows Varun’s character frantically trying to hide Mrunal Thakur’s handbag from Pooja Hegde inside the same apartment, underscoring the film’s farcical tone.

The film also revisits popular songs associated with David Dhawan’s earlier work, including recreated versions of “Chunari Chunari” and “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.” The title itself is taken from a song featured in the 1999 comedy Biwi No. 1, which starred Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Sushmita Sen.

Alongside the lead cast, the film features Jimmy Shergill, Maniesh Paul, Chunky Pandey, Rakesh Bedi, Mouni Roy and Ali Asgar in supporting roles. Jimmy Shergill appears as Pooja Hegde’s protective brother, while Mouni Roy plays a comic role as Varun Dhawan’s fake mother.

The trailer’s release comes amid an ongoing legal dispute involving producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment and Tips Music Limited. The trailer launch event was initially called off with the film’s team citing a “technical glitch.” However, legal counsel for Pooja Entertainment disputed that explanation.

VK Dubey, legal counsel for Pooja Entertainment, said, “Calling it a mere ‘technical glitch’ is nothing but an attempt to divert attention from the real issue. The truth is that a subsisting status quo order is already operating in the matter.”

Dubey also alleged that criminal proceedings involving accusations of cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, copyright infringement and conspiracy had been initiated against David Dhawan and executives associated with Tips Industries Ltd. He further questioned why caveats had allegedly been filed before multiple courts in Mumbai.

The dispute reportedly centres on the recreated use of the song “Chunari Chunari,” originally featured in Biwi No.1. Despite the legal controversy, the recreated track remains part of the trailer.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is produced by Ramesh Taurani under the banner of Tips Films, with Gaurav Bose of Maximilian Films serving as co-producer. Some reports have also described the film as potentially being the final directorial project in David Dhawan’s career.
