Kangana-Starrer Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata Faces Uphill Battle After Modest Opening

Kangana Ranaut’s latest film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata has opened to a modest start at the Indian box office, collecting ₹1 crore nett on its first day in theatres. The film, directed by Manoj Tapadia, released alongside several competing titles and struggled to draw strong footfalls despite receiving largely positive reviews.

Trade figures reported by Sacnilk show that the film earned ₹1 crore nett from 2,181 shows across India. It recorded an overall occupancy of about 11 percent through the day.

The opening places Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata behind Ranaut’s two previous theatrical releases. Emergency opened at ₹2.50 crore in 2025, while Tejas collected ₹1.25 crore on its first day in 2023. The new release also fell well short of the opening performance of Major, the 2022 film based on the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, which debuted with ₹7 crore.

Positive reviews but limited audience turnout

The film entered cinemas amid competition from releases including Main Vaapas Aaunga, starring Diljit Dosanjh, and Governor, led by Manoj Bajpayee. Industry observers are now watching whether positive word of mouth can help improve collections over the weekend.

Some trade reports noted that the film’s opening-day earnings came despite promotional offers, including a buy-one-get-one ticket scheme in certain markets.

While box-office numbers remained subdued, several reviews praised the film’s treatment of a lesser-known chapter of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and highlighted Ranaut’s restrained performance.

A story inspired by the heroes of Cama Hospital

Written and directed by Manoj Tapadia, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata is inspired by the true story of healthcare workers at Mumbai’s Cama Hospital during the 26/11 attacks.

The film focuses on the courage displayed by nurses, doctors and hospital staff who protected patients while terrorists attacked the facility. Central to the narrative is the story of nurse Anjali Kulthe, whose actions helped save 20 pregnant women during the crisis.

Ranaut plays Geeta Gandhare, a character inspired by real-life events. The film also stars Esha Dey, Girija Oak, Smita Tambe, Rasika Agashe and Sayaji Shinde in key roles.

Speaking about the project, Ranaut described it as an untold story of heroism that shines a light on healthcare workers who continued caring for patients despite facing life-threatening danger.

Critics praise performances and emotional depth

Critical response has largely focused on the film’s portrayal of ordinary people confronting extraordinary circumstances.

Reviews have commended Tapadia’s decision to centre the story on nurses and hospital staff rather than security forces, presenting a perspective less frequently explored in films based on the Mumbai attacks.

Several critics also praised the ensemble cast, particularly Girija Oak and Smita Tambe, while noting that Ranaut avoids overshadowing the broader narrative. The film has been credited for balancing suspense with emotional storytelling and for highlighting the sacrifices made by healthcare workers during one of India’s darkest nights.

A review by Hindustan Times described the film as a reminder that “heroism often wears a uniform far less celebrated than those of soldiers and commandos,” while other critics highlighted its focus on courage, resilience and duty in the face of terror.

Weekend performance now in focus

Produced by Manikarnika Films, PEN Studios and Paramhans Creations, Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata arrives at a crucial stage in Kangana Ranaut’s career following the underperformance of several recent releases.

With a ₹1 crore opening day, the film faces a challenging road ahead at the box office. Its immediate prospects will depend on audience reception over the weekend and whether favourable reviews can translate into stronger occupancy in the coming days.
