Rajesh Khanna’s Aashirwad Was Like a ‘Monument’, Says Emotional Mumtaz

Veteran actor Mumtaz has opened up about the emotional impact of the demolition of Aashirwad bungalow, once owned by late superstar Rajesh Khanna. Speaking in a recent interview, she described the iconic property as a “monument” and said its loss continues to affect her deeply.
“It did hurt me. Even today, when I see that building, I say, ‘This was my hero’s house,’” she said, reflecting on the bungalow’s significance.
Fond memories with Rajesh Khanna and Anju Mahendru
Mumtaz recalled frequently visiting Aashirwad and spending time with Khanna and his then partner Anju Mahendru. She described the warmth and hospitality she experienced during those visits.
“When Anju was with him, she would call me over and make me sit… Kaka and Anju would take such good care of us—‘Have this, eat that.’ People in the film industry are very large-hearted,” she said.
The actor also shared that her residence on Carter Road, originally owned by Meena Kumari, was located close to Aashirwad, making her visits more frequent. She would often bring along her husband, Mayur Madhvani, further highlighting the closeness of their bond.
Unanswered questions around the bungalow’s sale
Speaking about the fate of Aashirwad, Mumtaz said she had once heard that Khanna wanted the property to be converted into a museum after his death in 2012.
“That was the dream—that it would become a museum after his passing. But after he passed away, I don’t know why it was sold,” she said.
She added that while she had heard about possible internal issues, she chose not to speculate. “When you don’t know the truth, you shouldn’t comment,” she noted. The bungalow was later sold and eventually demolished, with a high-rise now occupying the site.
A legendary address in Bollywood history
Aashirwad held a special place in Hindi cinema history. Rajesh Khanna had purchased the bungalow from actor Rajendra Kumar, and it went on to become synonymous with his superstardom.
The property was known for hosting industry gatherings and meetings, becoming a hub of activity during Khanna’s peak years. Over time, it evolved into a cultural landmark, often associated with his larger-than-life persona.
Working equation with Rajesh Khanna
Mumtaz also reflected on her professional rapport with Khanna, with whom she delivered several successful films, including Do Raaste, Bandhan, Prem Kahani, Aap Ki Kasam, Sachaa Jhutha, and Apna Desh.
Addressing his well-known habit of arriving late on set, she said, “With Rajesh Khanna, we had an understanding. I knew he would come late, but he would finish his work.”
She explained how she adapted her shooting schedule accordingly, completing her solo scenes first before filming joint shots with him later. “I used to tell him, ‘My close-ups are done, you do your part now. You came late—I’m leaving,’” she added.
