Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has opened up about his relationship with Shubhra Shetty, including their plans for the future, the scrutiny surrounding their age difference and an emotional moment from the early days of their romance.
In a recent joint conversation with Janice Sequeira, Kashyap said marriage is not necessarily part of their plans because Shubhra does not believe in the institution. For the filmmaker, however, the relationship itself matters more than formally defining it.
“I’m very happy to be with her. I want to be with her. So, whatever that takes,”
Kashyap said when asked about marriage. He later explained that he is focused on preserving the relationship they have built, adding, “I don’t want to lose this.”
The filmmaker, 53, also reflected on the fears that can come with growing older while being in a relationship with someone around 20 years younger. He acknowledged that he had become increasingly conscious of their age difference over time and, at one point, tried to distance himself from Shubhra because of those concerns.
Anurag Kashyap recalls emotional moment with Shubhra
Shubhra recalled an early conversation that showed Kashyap how deeply their relationship had affected him. She said that during what she described as their honeymoon phase, she casually told him that being in love had been on her bucket list and that she could die happily after experiencing it.
The remark unsettled Kashyap. According to Shubhra, he became emotional and told her that before their relationship, he had never been particularly afraid of dying. Finding something he wanted to live for changed that perspective.
Shubhra described his response as one of the sweetest ways he had expressed what their relationship meant to him.
The couple also discussed how Kashyap’s greater life experience influenced their early relationship. Shubhra said he encouraged her to experience life independently and make her own decisions rather than feel defined by their relationship.
Their relationship and age difference
Kashyap and Shubhra have been together for more than a decade, although their relationship initially attracted significant public attention because of their age difference. Shubhra previously worked as an assistant director at Phantom Films, the production company Kashyap co-founded.
Their relationship became a subject of public discussion after Kashyap shared photographs with Shubhra, and he later spoke openly about being in a relationship with her in a 2018 interview. India Today reported at the time that the pair had been the subject of dating rumours for several years before Kashyap publicly acknowledged the relationship.
The couple has largely kept their private life away from extensive media coverage. In their recent conversation, Shubhra said they had initially tried to avoid making their relationship a public subject, although that privacy became difficult to maintain.
Kashyap said the age gap had become more noticeable to him as he grew older while Shubhra continued to look much the same. His comments came as the couple discussed the self-consciousness and outside scrutiny they have experienced during their relationship.
Kashyap’s marriages before Shubhra
Before his relationship with Shubhra, Kashyap was married to editor Aarti Bajaj. They separated in 2009 after six years of marriage and have a daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap.
He later married actor Kalki Koechlin in 2011. Their marriage ended after four years.
Kashyap has continued working in Hindi cinema alongside his personal life. His latest directorial film, Bandar, starring Bobby Deol, was released in Indian cinemas on June 5, 2026.
For now, Kashyap’s comments suggest that marriage is less important to him than maintaining the relationship he has built with Shubhra. His emphasis remains on being together rather than placing a formal label on their future.
