  • Riteish Deshmukh, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Elvish Yadav have been verbally confirmed for Malamaal Weekly 2, with formal paperwork underway.
  • Riteish is expected to lead the film but is still reading the script and has not formally signed on, according to Bollywood Hungama.
  • Amit Joshi, who directed Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, will helm the sequel, which is planned to enter production in November 2026.
  • The film will tell a completely new story while retaining the original’s themes of poverty, greed, sudden wealth and small-town chaos.
  • Parineeti Chopra, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shirodkar are also part of the reported female cast, with Shirodkar returning to Hindi cinema after 26 years.

Malamaal Weekly 2 is taking shape with Riteish Deshmukh, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Elvish Yadav locked as the film’s principal male cast, according to a new report from Bollywood Hungama. Riteish is expected to headline the comedy, although he is still reading the script and has yet to complete the formal signing process. The actors have verbally confirmed their involvement, with paperwork underway.

The casting brings back three performers from the 2006 original. Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh and Rajpal Yadav are set to reunite for a story that will not directly continue the plot of the first film. Elvish Yadav joins them as a new addition to the principal cast.

A new story with the original film’s comic premise

The sequel will feature a completely new storyline while retaining the central flavour of Malamaal Weekly: ordinary people in a small town becoming entangled in greed and chaos after the possibility of sudden wealth enters their lives. Amit Joshi has been brought on board to direct the film and is currently fine-tuning the screenplay. Production is planned to begin in November 2026.

Joshi previously directed Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya with Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. Bollywood Hungama first reported in February that Malamaal Weekly was being developed as a sequel and subsequently reported Joshi’s appointment in April.

The film’s ensemble has also expanded on the women’s side. Parineeti Chopra, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shirodkar have been reported as part of the cast. Shirodkar’s inclusion marks her return to Bollywood after 26 years; her last Hindi film was M.F. Husain’s Gaja Gamini, released in 2000.

Elvish Yadav joins the returning trio

For Elvish Yadav, the project represents his second Bollywood outing, following his upcoming action drama with Tiger Shroff and Remo D’Souza, according to Bollywood Hungama. His casting adds a younger digital-era name to a group anchored by actors strongly associated with Hindi comedy.

The casting development followed social-media exchanges involving the actors. On August 12, Paresh Rawal posted a message on X reflecting on wealth, money and the need for wisdom in handling it. Elvish Yadav responded to the post, adding to speculation about their involvement before the latest casting report. The exchange itself did not constitute a formal studio announcement, but came shortly before the cast report.

Twenty years after the original

Priyadarshan’s Malamaal Weekly was released in 2006 and became a box-office success. The comedy centred on Lilaram, a lottery ticket seller who tries to claim a winning ticket after its owner dies, only to find that other villagers are also determined to get their hands on the money. The film was later remade in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with Priyadarshan directing the Malayalam adaptation.

The sequel therefore returns to the franchise two decades after the original while changing its characters and storyline. For now, the project remains in the scripting and casting stage, with November 2026 set as the planned production start rather than a confirmed release date.
