Difficult to Digest Failure’: Prem Chopra on Rajesh Khanna’s Struggles

Veteran actor Prem Chopra has shared insights into one of Hindi cinema’s most defining transitions—the shift from Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom to the rise of Amitabh Bachchan. Speaking in an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Chopra recalled witnessing both the highs and the emotional challenges that came with changing times in the industry.

Rajesh Khanna’s ‘Silent Struggle’

According to Prem Chopra, Rajesh Khanna never openly discussed the slowdown in his career, but his inner turmoil was evident to those around him.

“He didn’t discuss it, but I could feel what was going on. It’s difficult for him to digest that failure… to accept this position when he was already a top star, a superstar,” Chopra said.

The actor explained that such transitions can be deeply unsettling, especially for someone who had experienced unmatched fame. He added that Khanna’s silence during this period “said more than words,” reflecting the emotional weight of the shift.

‘He Started Drinking Heavily’

Chopra also pointed to a noticeable change in Khanna’s personal habits during this phase.

“He was drinking earlier too, but then he started drinking heavily. This happens everywhere… when such things happen, an actor either drinks more or something goes wrong because they can’t tolerate what they were and what they are now.”

He noted that such reactions are not uncommon in the film industry, where the pressures of fame and its decline can take a significant emotional toll.

The Amitabh Bachchan Difference

Drawing a comparison, Prem Chopra highlighted what, in his view, helped Amitabh Bachchan sustain a long and successful career.

“The difference between him and Amitabh Bachchan is that Amitabh has accepted, ‘I am not the hero of the picture.’ He doesn’t take the film on his shoulders. It’s the character he is doing, and his character is outstanding.”

Chopra emphasized that Bachchan’s willingness to evolve with time—by embracing strong, character-driven roles instead of traditional hero-centric parts—played a key role in maintaining his relevance.

A Story of Persistence and Discipline

Recalling Bachchan’s earlier struggles, Chopra shared an anecdote that underscored his determination.

“He walked from his house to Yash Chopra’s house for a role when he had no work. He went and said, ‘I want work.’”

He further praised Bachchan’s professionalism and discipline, noting that the actor is known for arriving on set ahead of time and preparing thoroughly for his roles.

Fame, Transition, and Emotional Impact

Through his reflections, Prem Chopra highlighted the contrasting ways in which two of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars navigated changing fortunes. While Rajesh Khanna found it difficult to come to terms with his declining dominance, Amitabh Bachchan adapted to the evolving industry landscape, carving out a sustained second innings.
