More than a decade after 3 Idiots became a cultural phenomenon, a sequel is now officially in development. Actor and producer Aamir Khan confirmed that filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is working on 3 Idiots 2.

Speaking to Amar Ujala, Khan said he has already heard the narration. He described the story as “wonderful,” while noting that the screenplay still needs refinement.

Story Set 10 Years Later

According to Khan, the sequel will revisit the lives of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju after a decade. The film will retain the original tone but introduce a fresh narrative.

“It has the same humour and an unusual story,” he said. He added that the film follows the same characters, but picks up 10 years later.

Aamir Khan to Return as Rancho

Khan also confirmed his intention to reprise his role as Phunsukh Wangdu, also known as Rancho. He called the script a “beautiful story” written by Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi.

“This is one of the films I will be working on soon,” he said. He also expressed excitement about stepping back into the popular character.

Original Cast Likely to Reunite

Reports suggest the sequel may bring back key cast members from the original film. These include R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Earlier, Joshi had shared hopes about a sequel materialising. He had noted that previous rumours did not lead to a film, but remained optimistic.

Legacy of the 2009 Blockbuster

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became one of the most successful Indian films of its time. The film explored themes of education, friendship, and following one’s passion.

It also featured performances by Boman Irani, Omi Vaidya, and Mona Singh. Over the years, it has gained a strong following due to its storytelling and memorable dialogues.

Other Projects and Updates

Meanwhile, Khan shared that his planned reunion with Hirani for a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke has been put on hold. He said the script is still not finalised, prompting the team to pause development.

In addition, reports suggest Khan is in discussions for a biopic on Ashneer Grover. The project is yet to receive an official announcement.

At present, Khan is also promoting his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming film *Ek Din*, which stars Sai Pallavi and is set to release on May 1.
