Anurag Kashyap Questions Bollywood’s Culture of Selective Praise

Filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap has once again voiced his candid views on the film industry, stating that Bollywood tends to praise films only after they achieve commercial success.
Known for openly appreciating the work of fellow filmmakers and actors, Kashyap recently addressed why such appreciation is rarely reciprocated.
“Koi Nahi Bolta Main Kya Karoon”
During promotions for his latest film *Dacoit*, Kashyap was asked why he frequently praises others’ work but does not receive similar recognition.
Responding candidly, he said:
“बहुत से लोग मुझसे कहते हैं कि आप इतनी फिल्मों की तारीफ करते हैं, लेकिन कोई आपकी फिल्म की तारीफ नहीं करता… मुझे फिल्में बहुत पसंद हैं। इसलिए, जब मुझे कोई फिल्म पसंद आती है, तो मैं कह देता हूं। कोई नहीं बोलता मैं क्या करूं? बंदूक की नोक पर तो कोई मजबूर नहीं कर सकता।”
He emphasized that his appreciation stems from a genuine love for cinema, regardless of whether others return the gesture.
“जब फिल्म सफल होती है, तब सब तारीफ करते हैं”
Kashyap pointed to what he sees as a prevailing industry mindset:
“इंडस्ट्री का अभी यही हाल है, जब कोई फिल्म सफल हो जाती है, तो सब उसकी तारीफ करते हैं।”
His co-star Mrunal Thakur echoed a similar sentiment, noting that only a few individuals in the industry genuinely praise others’ work without bias.
A Consistent Voice of Appreciation
Over the years, Kashyap has consistently supported films and performances across the industry. He has praised projects like Animal, Dhurandhar and Subedaar, often sharing detailed reviews on social media.
Recently, he lauded Subedaar, starring Anil Kapoor, noting that the film deserved a theatrical release and highlighting its immersive storytelling set in the Bundelkhand-Chambal region.
He also spoke about Ranveer Singh’s dedication, recalling an incident from Lootera where the actor reportedly went to great lengths to authentically portray a scene, even risking injury.
Current Project: Dacoit
Kashyap is currently seen in the Telugu-Hindi action film Dacoit, marking his debut in Telugu cinema. The film also stars Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur and is directed by debutant Shaneil Deo.
Released recently, the film has received mixed reviews and recorded a modest opening at the box office.
Industry Reflection Through Personal Experience
Kashyap’s remarks reflect his long-standing position as an outspoken voice in Indian cinema—someone who continues to champion good storytelling while questioning industry norms around validation and success.
