Actor Maanvi Gagroo has spoken about some of the uncomfortable experiences she faced while trying to establish herself in the entertainment industry, including receiving a text message offering money in exchange for a “compromise.”

Speaking on the Two Girls & Two Cups podcast, Gagroo recalled receiving a message early in her career that read: “You will get more than ₹1 lakh if you are willing to compromise.”

The actor said she did not initially understand what the message implied.

“And this was in the beginning of my career, so I was like… I replied, saying, ‘compromise?’ because I did not know,” she said.

Gagroo added that she showed the message to a casting director she trusted, who immediately advised her to block the sender.

“I showed it to a casting director who was like a mentor sort of a thing. He was like, ‘Just delete, block, delete him,’” she recalled.

She also expressed surprise that such a proposal had been made through a text message.

“I was impressed, yaar. People usually think there should be no proof. They’ll say things on the phone so nobody can report them. But this was ‘₹1 lakh plus compromise’ in a text,” she said.

Misunderstanding the Meaning of ‘Compromise’

Looking back on the incident, Gagroo said her lack of familiarity with industry terminology left her confused about the sender’s intentions.

“Mujhe pehle laga compromise matlab budget mein compromise karoge ki nahi,”

She said, explaining that she initially thought the message referred to financial negotiations.

“I thought maybe it’s a financial thing. Like GST, you know? ₹1 lakh plus GST, complimentary something maybe. Plus compromise. I didn’t know.”

Reflecting on the challenges faced by newcomers without industry connections, she added, “This is what happens to non-nepo kids. Navigating all of this is not easy.”

Her Views on Nepotism

During the conversation, Gagroo also addressed the ongoing debate around nepotism in the film industry. She acknowledged that actors from film families often begin their careers with advantages that outsiders do not have.

“Star kids definitely have access. They can meet people more easily, they know the ecosystem and they have a network. But eventually, audiences decide who stays,” she said.

According to Gagroo, outsiders often have to put in greater effort to secure auditions, gain visibility and build professional relationships within the industry.

Another Early Career Experience

The actor also shared an incident involving a proposed cover shoot for Debonair magazine. She said she was initially excited about the opportunity because she was unfamiliar with the publication.

After discussing it with the man she was dating at the time and researching the magazine, she decided not to proceed with the shoot.

“I looked it up and I was like, ‘Oh.’ Then I immediately texted saying, ‘No, sorry, sorry, this isn’t something I want to do,’” she said.

Building a Career on Her Own Terms

Despite the challenges she encountered as a newcomer, Gagroo said she remained focused on improving her craft and pursuing meaningful roles.

She made her acting debut in the Disney television series Dhoom Machaao Dhoom in 2007 and later appeared in films including No One Killed Jessica and PK. She gained wider recognition through web series such as TVF Pitchers, Tripling, Made in Heaven, Four More Shots Please! and Half CA.

Gagroo also returned to the big screen with Heer Sara, a female-led road-trip drama co-starring Patralekhaa. Released on June 12, the film follows two women whose unexpected journey develops into a story of friendship and self-discovery.
