From Bhool Bhulaiyaa to Bhooth Bangla: Why Chomu Palace Remains Bollywood’s Go-To Haunted set

Bhooth Bangla, the latest horror-comedy starring Akshay Kumar and directed by Priyadarshan, transports audiences into a haunted mansion in the fictional town of Mangalpur. However, the eerie setting seen on screen is rooted in a real location—Jaipur’s historic Chomu Palace.
The palace serves as the primary filming location for the movie, recreating the fictional ‘Acharya Niwas,’ where the story unfolds. The plot follows Arjun Acharya (played by Kumar), who inherits the ancestral property and hosts his sister’s wedding there, only for the family to encounter a series of paranormal events tied to a mysterious entity.
A Familiar Backdrop From Bhool Bhulaiyaa
Interestingly, Chomu Palace is not new to Bollywood horror-comedy. The same location was previously used in Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), another collaboration between Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan.
The palace’s architecture—marked by long corridors, expansive courtyards, and shadowy alcoves—has made it a preferred destination for filmmakers looking to create an atmospheric blend of grandeur and unease. Its cinematic appeal lies in its ability to naturally evoke suspense without extensive set design.
A 350-Year-Old Palace With Royal Origins
Located about 45 kilometres from Jaipur along National Highway 11, Chomu Palace dates back over three centuries. Originally known as Chomugarh Fort, it was established in 1550 by Rao Gopalji, a descendant of Jaipur’s royal lineage and the fourth son of Raja Prithviraj Singhji I.
The structure was initially built as a fortified residence for nobles and military chiefs. A five-metre-thick outer wall was constructed to protect against invasions, reflecting its strategic importance during its early years.
Architecture That Enhances Its Cinematic Appeal
The palace showcases a blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles. Intricate jaali work allows light and air to pass through delicately carved stone screens, while frescoes and murals across walls and ceilings depict mythology, royal hunts, and court life.
Marble inlay work, known as pietra dura, further enhances the interiors with floral and geometric patterns. High ceilings, long hallways, and cavernous rooms create distinct acoustics—where footsteps echo and ambient sounds linger—adding to its suitability for horror storytelling.
Not Haunted, But Rich in Atmosphere
Despite its association with films like Bhooth Bangla and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Chomu Palace is not considered haunted. Its quiet surroundings, historic scale, and layered architecture create an atmosphere that can feel mysterious, but there are no verified claims of paranormal activity.
A Luxury Heritage Stay With Royal Experiences
Today, the palace has been restored into a heritage hotel managed by The Dangayach Group. It offers over 100 suites, combining traditional Rajasthani aesthetics with modern amenities.
Guests can experience antique furnishings, marble-finished rooms, and curated spaces such as banquet halls and dining areas. The property also caters to large-scale events, including weddings, with packages reportedly ranging between ₹50 lakh and ₹70 lakh for multi-day celebrations.
Room tariffs typically range between ₹39,999 and ₹51,999 per night, positioning it firmly in the luxury hospitality segment.

Released on April 17, 2026, Bhooth Bangla features an ensemble cast including Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Wamiqa Gabbi, Mithila Palkar, Rajpal Yadav, Jisshu Sengupta, and the late Asrani.
