CBFC Clears Awarapan 2 With UA 16+ Rating Ahead of Release
Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 has been cleared for theatrical release with a UA 16+ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), following a series of mandatory edits and modifications. The certification was granted on August 5, with the film set to arrive in cinemas on 14th August.
The CBFC directed the makers to introduce multiple disclaimers and make content-related changes before certification. These include warnings for scenes depicting drug use and child trafficking, anti-drug messaging during drug consumption scenes, and smoking-related health warnings where applicable. In keeping with certification rules introduced in 2021, the film’s title has also been included in Hindi.
Violence, Language and Drug Scenes Modified
The board also instructed the filmmakers to tone down several sequences involving violence. A violent scene in the second half was reportedly reduced by 50%, while three scenes containing extreme violence were trimmed. A sequence depicting drug snorting around the midpoint of the film was removed.
The certification process also required certain words deemed obscene to be replaced in both the audio track and English subtitles. The end credits were revised to align with the film’s music.
In total, the CBFC ordered four minutes of deletionsand 20 seconds of replacements, resulting in a final approved runtime of 140 minutes and 20 seconds (2 hours, 20 minutes and 20 seconds).
Release and Box Office Competition
Awarapan 2 stars Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi. The film is scheduled for release on 14th August, when it will face competition from Batwara 1947, which has received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC.
Among major Hindi releases scheduled this month, Awarapan 2 is the only film to receive a UA 16+ certification, while upcoming titles such as Toxic and Mirzapur: The Movie are expected to receive adult certifications.
