Actor and environmental advocate Dia Mirza has spoken candidly about her decision to step away from the film industry at the height of her early success, revealing that a two-year sabbatical helped her reconnect with herself and reassess what truly mattered in her life.

Appearing on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast All About Her, Dia reflected on the period when she chose to pause her flourishing career despite having achieved financial independence and professional recognition.

She described the experience as a “homecoming of sorts,” saying it allowed her to rediscover happiness and purpose beyond fame and material success.

Why Dia Mirza Chose to Take a Break

During the conversation, Dia explained that she often felt conflicted about the nature of her work as a model and actor.

“Like many, I was also sucked into the world of commodification, and as a model, my primary job was really to sell everything,” she said.

The actor added that she struggled to connect with some of the roles she was playing and questioned whether they reflected the values and principles she personally believed in.

Recalling the turning point, Dia said she stepped away from the industry in 2005 when she was 24 years old.

“I said I don’t like what I am doing. I am not having fun. I have made money. I am independent; I have a home I can call my own in a city that is now mine because it embraced me, and I don’t have to worry about my bills, but this is not making me happy,” she said.

The realization, she noted, prompted her to focus inward and reconnect with herself.

“And that’s when I realized I needed to go back to myself. So, it was like a homecoming of sorts.”

Parenthood and Environmental Responsibility

The podcast conversation, which coincided with World Environment Day, also explored Dia’s long-standing commitment to environmental causes and how motherhood has strengthened that connection.

Dia said becoming a parent brought a profound shift in perspective and deepened her commitment to sustainability.

“I think you experience a cellular shift when you become a parent. You become so awake and alive to every moment,” she said.

The actor shared that she encourages her son Avyaan to develop a meaningful relationship with nature through regular visits to green spaces and wildlife sanctuaries. She believes children can only learn to value the environment when they experience it firsthand.

“I don’t think we can teach children to love, respect, and care for nature unless we take them into nature,” Dia said.

At home, she focuses on simple habits such as conserving water and practicing gratitude for food and natural resources, helping her son understand their connection to the environment.

A Call for Meaningful Environmental Action

Marking World Environment Day, Dia also used social media to urge people to move beyond symbolic gestures and embrace meaningful environmental action.

In a message shared online, she highlighted growing inequalities in access to clean air, water and dignified living conditions, while calling for more responsible consumption and stronger conservation efforts.

“It is time to stop treating environmental action as an optional extra. It is time to move beyond token gestures and towards meaningful change,” she wrote.

Dia encouraged individuals to reduce single-use plastic consumption, manage waste responsibly, protect ecosystems and support conservation initiatives. She concluded her message by urging people to act with “courage, urgency and hope” for the future of the planet.

A Career Built Across Cinema and Advocacy

Dia Mirza made her Bollywood debut with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and went on to feature in films such as Dus, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Shootout at Lokhandwala and Kurbaan. More recently, she earned acclaim for her performances in Sanju and Thappad.

Alongside her acting career, she has become one of the most prominent voices in India advocating for environmental conservation, climate action and sustainable living.
