Sayani Gupta Named Harvard South Asian Association’s 2026 Person of the Year

Actor Sayani Gupta has been named the 2026 Person of the Year by the Harvard South Asian Association, recognising her contribution to film, storytelling, and representation. She is set to be formally felicitated at Harvard University later this month.
The annual honour is awarded to individuals who have significantly influenced how South Asian identity is expressed and understood in public life.
Recognition for Storytelling and Representation
Announcing the award, the Harvard South Asian Association highlighted Gupta’s impact on contemporary narratives and cultural representation.
“As Harvard’s premier organisation celebrating South Asian culture, creativity, and leadership, we annually recognise an individual whose work has meaningfully shaped how South Asian identity is expressed and understood in public life,” the organisation said.
It added that Gupta’s performances have “consistently challenged conventions and brought depth, boldness, and authenticity to contemporary narratives,” positioning her as a strong voice for inclusive storytelling.
A Diverse Body of Work Across Platforms
Gupta has built a varied career across films, streaming platforms, and theatre. She is known for projects such as Four More Shots Please!, Axone, Article 15, Inside Edge, and Delhi Crime.
Her portrayal of Damini Rizvi Roy in Four More Shots Please!—a journalist navigating professional and personal challenges—earned particular attention for its layered and contemporary characterisation. She also made a guest appearance in Call Me Bae, expanding her presence in digital storytelling.
An alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Gupta has consistently chosen roles that explore complex social themes and character-driven narratives.
Joins Distinguished List of Honourees
With this recognition, Gupta joins a notable list of past recipients, including chef Vikas Khanna, who received the award the previous year. The honour reflects her growing global cultural impact and influence within the South Asian creative landscape.
Expanding Creative Horizons
Alongside this milestone, Gupta is entering a new phase in her career as a writer-director. Her short film Aasmani is set to premiere at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival on April 25, followed by a screening at the Indie Meme Film Festival on April 26.
The project marks her directorial debut, adding another dimension to her creative portfolio.
