Jyotika Says Tamil Industry Valued Her Work Despite Debut Flops in Hindi and Tamil

Jyotika has spoken about how the commercial failure of her debut Hindi film led to an abrupt slowdown in her Bollywood career, while the Tamil film industry continued to offer her opportunities despite a similar box-office outcome there. The actor said Tamil cinema focused on her performance rather than the financial performance of her early films, a shift she believes shaped her long-term success.
Jyotika made her acting debut in Hindi cinema with Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshaye Khanna. The film, a remake of the Malayalam film Aniyathipraavu, did not perform well at the box office.
Reflecting on that phase during a conversation with Times Entertainment, Jyotika said, “My first Hindi film didn’t do well at the box office, and the doors were immediately shut for me. At the same time, my first Tamil film also didn’t do well at the box office, but they looked at my work, and I got flooded by film offers after that.”
The actor said she doubts she would have received the same range of roles had she remained only in Bollywood. Over the years, she became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars and won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress five times.
Speaking about her journey in South cinema, Jyotika said Chennai transformed both her professional and personal life. “I love Chennai. I think it’s traditional, it has given me my bread and butter, it has given me my family,” she said in an interview with NDTV.
She also reflected on the variety of characters she was able to portray in Tamil films. “I have played deaf and mute, I have played blind. I have played every character I could have asked for, so that’s like a God’s gift to me,” she said.
While discussing her return to Hindi projects later in her career, Jyotika praised the way Bollywood now writes female characters aged 40 and above. She said the South Indian film industries are still exploring that space.
“When I returned to Bollywood in my 40s, I felt that the way they are writing for women here… we still have to explore that space in the South. Female characters aged 40 and above are sensibly written here. So, both Bollywood and the South industry have their pluses and minuses,” she said.
Jyotika also described returning to Mumbai after many years as an emotional experience. The actor, who was born and raised in the city, spoke about missing everyday aspects of Mumbai life, including speaking Hindi and local street food.
She is set to appear next in System, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. The film also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Ashutosh Gowariker and is scheduled to release on Amazon Prime Video on May 22.
Jyotika was last seen in the Netflix crime drama series Dabba Cartel alongside Shabana Azmi, Shalini Pandey, Bhupendra Jadawat, Nimisha Sajayan and Anjali Anand.
