How Farah Khan Groomed Deepika Padukone for Her Bollywood Debut

Farah Khan has shared fresh details about the extensive preparation that went into launching Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om, revealing that the future star underwent months of training and observation before facing the camera alongside Shah Rukh Khan.

Speaking during a recent cooking vlog featuring actor Dia Mirza, the filmmaker recalled that Deepika entered the project with raw talent but needed guidance in areas such as confidence, diction and screen performance before making her Bollywood debut in the 2007 blockbuster.

Farah said she invested significant time in preparing Deepika for the demanding role of Shantipriya, a character that required both emotional depth and the poise of a classic Hindi film star. To help her develop those skills, the director enrolled the newcomer in acting classes conducted by veteran actor Anupam Kher for three to four months and arranged Kathak training, along with multiple look tests.

The preparation extended beyond formal lessons. Farah revealed that she deliberately postponed Deepika’s shoot schedule by 10 days and asked her to spend time on set simply observing experienced actors at work.

“I told her to come to the set every day and watch how Shah Rukh Khan and Shreyas Talpade worked,” Farah recalled, explaining that learning through observation was an important part of the process.

The comments emerged during a conversation about the contrasting experiences of newcomers in the film industry. Dia Mirza, who made her acting debut with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein in 2001, reflected on how different her own introduction to filmmaking had been.

Dia said she often heard stories about debutants receiving workshops, acting lessons, dance training and diction coaching, but received little of that support herself. Recalling her early years, she said she was pushed directly into multiple film projects and frequently worked exhausting schedules stretching up to 27 or 28 hours at a time.

“Nothing was done. I was sent straight to work in five films,” Dia said, describing the intense pace of her early career. She added that she had barely heard the script of Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein before agreeing to the project after being assured it would be a hit.

The exchange prompted Farah to jokingly remind Deepika of the effort that went into her launch, underscoring the filmmaker’s belief that structured preparation can make a crucial difference for newcomers entering the industry.

Farah’s remarks also offer insight into why Om Shanti Om remains one of Bollywood’s most successful star launches. Released in 2007, the film featured Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in dual roles and became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year. Praised for its music, lavish production design and nostalgic celebration of Bollywood, the film established Deepika as an overnight sensation.

Her portrayal of both 1970s superstar Shantipriya and contemporary actor Sandy earned widespread acclaim and laid the foundation for one of Hindi cinema’s most successful careers.

Farah suggested that Deepika’s transformation did not happen overnight. The actress arrived on the project eager but nervous, and the director believed careful grooming was necessary before placing a debutante opposite one of the industry’s biggest stars.

The partnership proved highly successful. Since Om Shanti Om, Deepika and Shah Rukh Khan have reunited for several major box-office hits, including Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Pathaan and Jawan.

The duo is now set to share screen space once again in King, directed by Siddharth Anand. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Suhana Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghav Juyal and Arshad Warsi, and is scheduled for release on December 24, 2026.

Farah’s recollections highlight the often-unseen work that goes into creating a successful screen debut, and how mentorship, training and on-set exposure helped shape one of Bollywood’s most enduring stars.
