Actor Ishaan Khatter has sparked discussion online after sharing an unconventional response to a fan who asked about his religion during an Instagram Ask Me Anything session.
The fan wrote, “Your religion? I mean, I am getting confused.”
Ishaan replied, “Jai Jesus, Shree Allah, Holy Spirit Di Fateh.”
He later followed up with another message that reflected a broader outlook, writing, “Nature, kindness, humanity, creation.”
The response quickly gained attention across social media platforms, with many users interpreting it as a message that emphasized values and humanity over religious labels.
A Response Beyond Labels
Ishaan’s answer combined references associated with different faith traditions, while his follow-up post appeared to focus on personal values rather than religious identity.
The actor shared the response alongside a scenic photograph of himself standing against a backdrop filled with hot-air balloons. His remarks stood out for avoiding a direct religious classification and instead highlighting ideas of kindness, nature and humanity.
Family Background
Ishaan Khatter comes from a family with diverse cultural roots. His mother, actress and classical dancer Neelima Azeem, was raised in a Muslim household, while his father, actor Rajesh Khattar, belongs to a Punjabi Hindu family.
He is also the half-brother of actor Shahid Kapoor. Both share the same mother, Neelima Azeem, while Shahid is the son of her first husband, actor Pankaj Kapur.
Ishaan Khatter’s Career
Ishaan began his journey in films as a child artist in the 2005 family comedy-drama Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! starring Shahid Kapoor. He later worked as an assistant director on Udta Punjab (2016), which featured Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
His breakthrough as a lead actor came with acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi’s 2017 drama Beyond the Clouds, where he played Amir, a young drug dealer. His performance earned him the Best Actor award at the International Bosphorus Film Festival in Turkey.
In 2018, Ishaan entered mainstream commercial cinema with Dhadak, opposite Janhvi Kapoor. The film was a Hindi remake of the Marathi hit Sairat and marked a major milestone in his career.
He has since appeared in projects including Khaali Peeli, Phone Bhoot, Pippa, The Perfect Couple and the web series The Royals.
Latest Project
Ishaan was last seen in director Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homeboundwhich also featured Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and received a nine-minute standing ovation.
Homebound was selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2026 but did not make the final shortlist. The film nevertheless earned widespread appreciation during its festival run for its storytelling and performances.
