Sara Ali Khan has opened up about her eating habits before entering Bollywood, recalling a phase when she weighed around 96 kg and regularly consumed two pizzas and three brownies a day during her student life in New York. The actor described the period as one of “mindless eating” before eventually undergoing a major fitness transformation ahead of her debut in Kedarnath.

Speaking during a conversation with Curly Tales while promoting Pati Patni Aur Woh 2 alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet Singh, Sara reflected on how unhealthy food habits had become a routine during her college years.

“I used to study in New York. There, a large pizza was more expensive than two medium pizzas. Because there used to be a deal: if you buy one medium pizza, you get the second one for 50 percent off. So I didn’t realise that would also mean me becoming 50 percent more,” she said.

Sara added that she would often order “two medium pizzas every single day” because of the offer.

The actor also recalled her breakfast routine from those years, admitting that she regularly ate “three chocolate chip brownies” while walking from the cafeteria to class.

“My breakfast used to be three chocolate chip brownies,” Sara said, adding that she would finish them during a short walk to her classroom.

Looking back at that stage of her life, Sara described her relationship with food as careless and uncontrolled.

“I still love food. But I’ve lost the mindlessness. Now, I’m very mindful. I’m aware of what I’m eating,” she said.

Sara Ali Khan also shared lighter anecdotes about her eating habits, including her fondness for pav bhaji with extra butter, biryani with extra potatoes and ordering multiple vada pavs because she did not want to share them.

Her transformation before joining Bollywood has remained one of the most discussed aspects of her early career. Sara has previously spoken about dealing with PCOS, a hormonal condition that contributed to weight gain and pushed her to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

In a 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Sara said, “We can talk about acceptance and equality, but you will not watch a movie with your lead heroine being 96 kilos.”

She later revealed that filmmaker Karan Johar encouraged her to lose weight before offering her a film opportunity.

On Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast in 2023, Sara reflected on the emotional challenges attached to weight issues and body image.

“I wasn’t overweight, I broke the weighing scale,” she said, adding that she had to remain “extremely mindful” about food even now.

Sara said she eventually lost more than 45 kg through disciplined lifestyle changes that included cycling, running, Pilates, yoga, dance, strength training and functional workouts. She also reduced junk food, refined sugar and processed carbohydrates from her diet.

In an earlier interview with SCREEN, Sara described balance as the key to her transformation.

“You can’t be on a diet and not work out or the other way round,” she said.

Sara Ali Khan made her Bollywood debut with Kedarnath opposite late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. She was recently seen in Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, directed by Mudassar Aziz and co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh and Wamiqa Gabbi.

The actor is next set to appear in the biographical drama Udta Teer, which is scheduled to release on September 11, 2026.
