Priyanka Chopra Challenges Gender Stereotypes Around Household Chores

Priyanka Chopra has spoken out against traditional gender roles in the home, saying household chores such as cooking and cleaning should not be viewed as a woman’s responsibility but as essential life skills for every adult.

Speaking at Cannes Lions, the actor addressed long-standing assumptions around domestic responsibilities, arguing that everyday tasks are often unfairly assigned based on gender. Her remarks have resonated widely amid ongoing conversations about gender equality and the division of household labour.

“Cleaning and cooking aren’t women’s work. They’re basic adulting. Don’t confuse gender with laziness,” Priyanka said, challenging the belief that domestic work should fall primarily on women.

The actor’s comments come at a time when discussions around shared responsibilities and equal partnerships are gaining momentum. Priyanka stressed that household duties should be viewed as fundamental life skills rather than gender-defined roles, reflecting broader societal efforts to move beyond traditional expectations.

Beyond social issues, Priyanka also reflected on how technology has transformed the entertainment industry. She highlighted the growing accessibility of content creation, noting that aspiring filmmakers no longer face the same barriers that once limited entry into the profession.

“If you wanted to get into filmmaking, you used to have to figure out what department you wanted to be in. It was really hard to get into the industry,” she said.

Today, creators can develop and distribute content independently through digital platforms. Referencing the success of the Hollywood supernatural horror film Obsession, Priyanka said a strong idea can now find an audience without relying on traditional industry gatekeepers.

“What a wonderful time to be an entertainer, to be in the entertainment business, because ideas are your currency,” she said, describing the opportunities available in the digital era.

The actor also reflected on her career across Bollywood and Hollywood. While discussing her professional journey, Priyanka noted that her Hindi-language career allowed her to work with leading filmmakers and actors across a wide range of genres. She said she still hopes to explore more diverse opportunities within her English-language projects.

On the professional front, Priyanka is preparing for a significant return to Indian cinema after an extended absence. She is set to star in filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s ambitious pan-India project Varanasi, alongside Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film, reportedly mounted on a budget of around ₹1,000 crore, is expected to be among the most expensive Indian productions ever made and is slated for release in April 2027.

Her international slate continues to expand as well. Priyanka is attached to a project with Orlando Bloom and is developing Mira Nair’s biographical drama Amri. She has also confirmed an upcoming collaboration with Angelina Jolie, though details about the venture remain under wraps. The actor has not disclosed whether the partnership is for a film, a commercial project, or another initiative, but the announcement has already generated significant interest among fans and industry observers.

Priyanka’s remarks at Cannes Lions highlighted two themes shaping her public persona today: advocating for greater gender equality in everyday life and embracing a rapidly changing entertainment landscape where creativity and ideas increasingly determine success.
