25 Years of Gadar: Sunny Deol Shares Heartfelt Note, Recalls Film’s Legacy

Actor Sunny Deol marked 25 years of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha by sharing a heartfelt message for fans who have kept the film and its iconic characters alive in popular culture for more than two decades.
The actor took to Instagram to celebrate the milestone, posting memorable stills from the film and expressing gratitude for the affection audiences have shown since its release.
“25 Years Ago Gadar and Tara Singh conquered your hearts. 25 saal se pyaar ke rishte ki gaddi chall rahi aur aage bhi chalti hi rahegi. Thank you all for giving all of us 25 years of abundant love and making us stay in your hearts, hope we keep staying there,” Deol wrote.
A Film That Became a Cultural Phenomenon
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha released on June 15, 2001, and went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema. The film starred Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver, and Ameesha Patel as Sakina, a Muslim woman caught in the turmoil of the Partition of India.
Set against the backdrop of 1947, the story follows the couple’s love and separation after political upheaval forces Sakina to remain in Pakistan. Tara’s journey across the border to reunite with his family became one of the film’s defining emotional and action-driven arcs.
The film also featured the late Amrish Puri in a pivotal role and earned widespread popularity for its powerful performances, patriotic themes and memorable dialogues.
Box Office Success and Lasting Legacy
Despite releasing alongside Aamir Khan’s Lagaan, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha emerged as a major commercial success. It reportedly grossed more than ₹133 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its time.
The film’s enduring popularity eventually led to the release of Gadar 2 in 2023. The sequel reunited Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel as Tara Singh and Sakina, while continuing the family’s story years after the events of the original film.
Set 17 years later, Gadar 2 follows Tara Singh’s mission after he is believed to have been imprisoned in Pakistan. His son Jeete, played by Utkarsh Sharma, crosses the border in an attempt to bring him home.
The sequel proved to be another major success at the box office, earning more than ₹600 crore worldwide during its theatrical run and becoming one of the biggest Hindi film hits of recent years.
What’s Next for Sunny Deol and the Gadar Franchise?
The success of Gadar 2 has paved the way for another chapter in the franchise. Director Anil Sharma has confirmed that Gadar 3 is in development and could arrive in theatres in 2027.
Away from the franchise, Sunny Deol is also set to make his OTT debut with Netflix’s courtroom drama Ikka. Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, the film will reunite Deol with Akshaye Khanna nearly three decades after they appeared together in Border.
As Gadar completes 25 years, the film continues to hold a special place in Indian cinema, with Tara Singh remaining one of Sunny Deol’s most celebrated characters.
