David Dhawan Explains Why His Film with Shah Rukh Khan Never Happened

Veteran Bollywood filmmaker David Dhawan, known for delivering commercial hits with stars like Govinda, Salman Khan, and Sanjay Dutt, has addressed a long-standing question in Hindi cinema: why he never directed Shah Rukh Khan.
Speaking during promotions for his upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Dhawan clarified that the absence of a collaboration was not due to creative differences or deliberate choices, but rather timing and scheduling constraints at the peak of his career.
“We Were Planning Something, But I Was Always Busy”
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Dhawan revealed that a project with Shah Rukh Khan had once been in discussion.
“Aisi baat nahi hai (It isn’t like that). I think at one time we were planning to do something together. But I was always busy. Always mere paas do pictures floor mein rahti thi (I always had two films on the floors at that time). So, it was very difficult, you know. But definitely at one stage it was there,” he said.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, Dhawan was among the busiest directors in Bollywood, often juggling multiple productions simultaneously. This demanding schedule, he indicated, made it difficult to align timelines with Shah Rukh Khan, who was also one of the industry’s most in-demand actors.
No Preference for Specific Actors
Dhawan also dismissed the idea that he limited himself to working with a select group of actors, despite his frequent collaborations with Govinda, Salman Khan, and Sanjay Dutt.
“Par mera kabhi bhi aisa nahi hai ke main yeh actor ke saath work karunga. Maine jaise Govinda ke saath kiya, Salman ke saath kiya, Sanjay… wohi ho gaya tha hisab kitab,”
He explained, suggesting that repeated collaborations were more circumstantial than intentional.
Over a career spanning decades, Dhawan directed around 45 films, including popular titles like Biwi No. 1, Partner, Coolie No. 1, and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Despite working with many of Bollywood’s biggest names, a project with Shah Rukh Khan never came to fruition.
Focus Shifts to ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’
Dhawan is now preparing for the release of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring his son Varun Dhawan alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde. The film also features Maniesh Paul, Chunky Pandey, Jimmy Shergill, and Mouni Roy.
The teaser recently sparked online backlash over the use of AI-generated toddlers. Addressing the criticism, Dhawan denied that artificial intelligence plays a role in the film’s narrative.
“AI hai hee nahin picture mein… Kya karein kuch alag karein, to banake dekha humne. Theek laga. Kahani bhi ye nahin hai… It’s just a teaser. You’ll get to know when the songs will come. The picture has got nothing to do (with AI),” he told ANI.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 22.
