Film’s Theme and Cast

Produced by T-Series Films and Benaras Mediaworks, Assi addresses the sensitive issue of sexual assault and the systemic challenges faced by survivors seeking justice. The title refers to the reported average number of rape cases filed daily in India.

Taapsee Pannu plays advocate Raavi, representing a survivor in court. The film also features Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in key roles. Naseeruddin Shah appears in a special role.

The film marks the third collaboration between Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha after Mulk and Thappad.

Javed Akhtar Praises the Film

Lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar praised the film, describing it as “very graceful” and noting that it touches “both heart and mind at the same time.” He said the narrative leaves audiences with serious questions rather than easy answers, adding that it resonates emotionally while encouraging reflection.

Taapsee Pannu Urges Viewers to Watch

Amid its theatrical run, Taapsee shared an emotional video message encouraging audiences to watch and write about the film.

Reflecting on the response, she said:

“Kuch filme hoti hain jinke liye messages aate hain kin – What a story! … Aur kuch filme hoti hain jinke reviews me consistently ek common baat likhi hoti hai ki – Very uncomfortable – Disgusted, but a must see! – Aisi ek film aayi thi 6 years pehle – Thappad – aur usi director ki fortunately starring me ek aur picture aai hafta pehle – Assi.”

She further added:

“Film jaise bhi lage, par likhna zaroor… thoda uncomfortable kar sakti hai par yaad rahegi.”

The actor emphasized the importance of dialogue around difficult subjects and invited honest audience feedback.

Box Office Context

Despite critical appreciation and steady weekday hold, Assi has yet to cross the ₹10 crore mark domestically. Trade data indicates it is currently among the lower-grossing Hindi releases in Taapsee Pannu’s filmography.

The film continues its theatrical run amid competition at the box office.
