Bollywood’s comedy slate for 2026 and 2027 continues to expand, and another well-known title is poised to return. Malamaal Weekly 2 is officially in the works, with key actors from the original film being approached for the new installment.

According to sources, discussions have begun for the sequel to Malamaal Weekly, the rural comedy that released in March 2006. The upcoming project is not positioned as a direct sequel but rather as a fresh story built on a similar thematic foundation.

Not a Direct Sequel, But a New Story

A source close to the development confirmed that the team has locked an idea suited for a second installment. While the characters and setting will differ from the 2006 film, the narrative will once again revolve around a group of greedy villagers willing to go to extreme lengths to secure a large sum of money.

The film will retain the comedic chaos and situational humor that defined the original, while presenting a new storyline.

Paresh Rawal Gives Verbal Consent

Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has reportedly given his nod to the project, though he has yet to sign the contract. Talks are also underway with Riteish Deshmukh and Rajpal Yadav, both of whom played pivotal roles in the first film.

The trio were central to the original ensemble, which has since developed a loyal fan base over the past two decades.

Revisiting the 2006 Film

Directed by Priyadarshan, Malamaal Weekly centered on the only educated man in a rural village who discovers that a fellow villager has won a ₹1 crore lottery prize — only to learn that the winner has died.

What followed was a series of increasingly desperate and absurd attempts by villagers to conceal the death from a lottery inspector, while simultaneously trying to keep the village head in the dark.

The film also featured Reema Sen, Shakti Kapoor, Sudha Chandran, and the late Asrani, Rasika Joshi, and Innocent in key roles.

Comedy Wave in 2026–27

The sequel’s development comes amid expectations that ensemble comedies will dominate the box office over the next two years. Several established franchises are lined up for release, including:

  • Welcome To The Jungle
  • Dhamaal 4
  • Bhagam Bhag 2
  • Hera Pheri 3
  • Golmaal 5

With casting yet to be formally announced, Malamaal Weekly 2 adds to a growing list of returning comedy franchises aiming to reconnect with audiences through ensemble-driven storytelling.
