Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming directorial Bandar, headlined by Bobby Deol, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 22, 2026. The announcement comes after the film garnered critical acclaim during its premiere at the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2025.

The film will release globally in cinemas, marking one of the notable theatrical outings of 2026.

Premiere at TIFF 2025 Builds Momentum

Bandar had its international premiere in the Special Presentations category at TIFF 2025. The screening generated significant attention, with critics describing the film as hard-hitting and impactful. The festival showcase positioned the project as one of Kashyap’s anticipated releases following its strong reception overseas.

The film is reportedly inspired by real-life events and explores themes surrounding systemic injustice and the complexities of the legal system.

Plot Overview: A Fading Star and a Legal Battle

The story follows Samar, a once-popular television star portrayed by Bobby Deol. As his career declines, Samar finds stability in a new relationship with a younger woman named Khushi. However, his past resurfaces when his former partner, Gayatri, attempts to reconnect with him.

After Samar cuts off contact, Gayatri accuses him of rape, leading to his arrest. The narrative then centers on his battle within a legal system portrayed as corrupt and determined to keep him incarcerated. The film examines courtroom dynamics and the personal and social fallout of such allegations.

Cast and Crew

Alongside Deol, Bandar features an ensemble cast including Sanya Malhotra, Raj B Shetty, Jitendra Joshi, Sapna Pabbi, Indrajith Sukumaran, Riddhi Sen, and Nagesh Bhosle in pivotal roles.

The screenplay has been written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee. Sharma is known for creating acclaimed web series such as Paatal Lok and Kohrra. Kashyap and Sharma have previously collaborated on projects including Udta Punjab.

The film is produced by Nikhil Dwivedi under his banner Saffron Magicworks and backed by Zee Studios.

Box Office Line-Up

In India, Bandar is slated to release on the same day as filmmaker Milap Zaveri’s Tera Yaar Hoon Main, which stars Aman Indra Kumar, Akanksha Sharma, and Paresh Rawal. Given the differing genres of the two films, trade observers do not anticipate a direct box office clash.

Recent and Upcoming Projects

For Anurag Kashyap, Bandar will mark his second major release cycle following the eventual Indian release of his 2023 thriller Kennedy on ZEE5 in February.

Bobby Deol, meanwhile, continues a strong run with diverse projects. After appearances in films such as Animal and Kanguva, he is also set to feature in Jana Nayagan and Alpha, though release dates for those projects remain unconfirmed.

With its festival acclaim, ensemble cast, and socially driven narrative, Bandar is positioned as a significant theatrical release for 2026.
