Salman Khan’s ‘Battle of Galwan’ Retitled ‘Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace’

Actor Salman Khan’s upcoming war drama, earlier titled Battle of Galwan, has officially been renamed Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. The new title was revealed on Monday along with a fresh poster that reflects the film’s central theme of sacrifice and the human cost of war.
The project, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, is inspired by the deadly 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
New Poster and Anti-War Message
Salman Khan announced the new title through social media, unveiling a striking poster showing him in a rugged battle look with a bloodied face and hands, positioned behind a wooden log wrapped with a spiked chain.
The poster prominently features the film’s tagline: “May War Rest in Peace.” According to the makers, the message highlights a broader theme beyond military conflict, focusing on the emotional and human dimensions of war.
The film is produced under the banner of Salman Khan Films.
Why the Title Was Changed
Director Apoorva Lakhia explained that the title change was not a sudden decision. Both Battle of Galwan and Maatrubhumi had been registered during the early stages of the project.
“Changing the title may feel sudden to SK sir’s fans, but it was never an overnight decision,” Lakhia said in an interview. “From the start, we had registered two titles. As we went through the journey of making the film, we realised it was never just about a battle.”
He added that the new title better reflects the emotional core of the story.
“At its heart, the film is about humanity, empathy, and the silent battles our soldiers fight. Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace captures that emotion and sacrifice far more truthfully.”
Lakhia also noted that the film features a song with the same title, and the positive response to it helped reinforce the decision.
Story Inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley Clash
The film draws inspiration from the confrontation that took place on June 15–16, 2020, in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley. The clash involved hand-to-hand combat between Indian and Chinese troops and resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers, making it one of the most serious military confrontations between the two nations in decades.
In the film, Salman Khan portrays Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who led Indian troops during the confrontation while enforcing a disengagement agreement at the border.
Cast and Crew
Apart from Salman Khan, the film features:
- Chitrangda Singh
- Ankur Bhatia
- Abhilash Chaudhary
- Zeyn Shaw
- Vipin Bhardwaj
The music for the film has been composed by Himesh Reshammiya.
Release Date May Shift
The film was initially scheduled to release on April 17, 2026. However, industry reports suggest the release could be pushed to mid-August, potentially aligning with the Independence Day weekend.
The delay is reportedly linked to ongoing shooting and reshoots, with production schedules affected by unforeseen circumstances.
Film Faces Criticism in China
Even before its release, the project has generated international attention. After the teaser circulated online, some users on the Chinese social media platform Weibo accused the film of misrepresenting events surrounding the Galwan Valley clash.
Certain Chinese state media outlets also criticised the film, alleging it promotes Indian nationalism and distorts facts related to the 2020 conflict.
However, the filmmakers have not directly responded to the criticism.
MEA Distances Itself From the Project
Earlier this year, the Ministry of External Affairs clarified that it has no involvement in the production of the film.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that issues related to filmmaking in India are handled by the relevant authorities, and the ministry does not play a role in such projects.
A War Film With a Broader Message
While inspired by real events, the makers say Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace aims to go beyond a straightforward military retelling. The film intends to explore the emotional realities faced by soldiers and the human consequences of conflict.
By shifting the title from Battle of Galwan to Maatrubhumi, the creators hope to frame the narrative around sacrifice, humanity, and the pursuit of peace rather than focusing solely on the battlefield.
