Karan Johar Reacts to Back-to-Back Blockbusters

Sharing his thoughts on social media, Johar wrote that the consecutive successes of Dhurandhar and Border 2 prove that Hindi cinema continues to thrive when films strike an emotional chord with paying audiences. He added that online criticism and negativity have little impact when audience acceptance is strong at the box office.

Johar’s remarks come at a time when both films have posted record-breaking theatrical numbers, reinforcing confidence within the Hindi film industry after a period of uncertainty.

Border 2 Box Office Performance

Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. The war drama, inspired by the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict, released on January 23, 2026, and opened to strong collections across India.

According to trade estimates, the film crossed 120 crore net in India within its first three days, aided by positive word of mouth and the Republic Day weekend. The film has since continued its upward trajectory, emerging as one of the biggest openers of 2026.

Dhurandhar’s Historic Box Office Run

Ranveer Singh-led Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, has been one of the most successful Hindi films in recent years. Released on December 5, 2025, the spy action thriller has collected over 800 crore net in India, with its worldwide earnings surpassing 1,280 crore.

The film, which also stars Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, has been praised for its gripping narrative rooted in geopolitical events. Its sustained theatrical run has made it one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time. A sequel, Dhurandhar 2, is scheduled for release on March 19, 2026.

Industry Sentiment and Audience Connect

Johar’s comments reflect a growing sentiment within the film fraternity that large-scale Hindi films are regaining audience trust. He previously praised Border 2 for its emotional depth and patriotic core, noting that strong theatrical responses matter more than social media discourse.

With Border 2 drawing large crowds and Dhurandhar continuing its record-breaking run, the industry is witnessing renewed optimism, driven by content-led cinema and audience engagement.
